Description
Gregg's Pit deeds show that the cottage and traditional orchards have been in existence since 1785, taking their name from a marl pit in a neighboring orchard. Owner James Marsden bought Gregg's Pit in 1992 and set about restoring the cottage and orchard, both of which had been badly neglected. As Marsden cleared the overgrown brush and scrap, he rediscovered the many varieties of cider apple and perry pear trees and planted new trees to fill the gaps in the orchard.
James Marsden made his first perry at Gregg's Pit in 1994, restoring a tradition that had last taken place in the 1920s. He and his partner Helen Woodman have been developing the orchard for over twenty years.
